Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization 2 (BICEP2)에서 원시 B모드 편극(http://www.sciencemag.org/content/328/5981/989 )을 검출한 것인데, 그 제목을 "대폭발(빅뱅)에서 온 중력파가 검출되다"로 뽑은 것은 좀 맘에 들지 않는다.

Science 21 May 2010: Vol. 328 no. 5981 pp. 989-992 (DOI: 10.1126/science.1179541)의 종설논문의 초록은

"The observation of primordial gravitational waves could provide a new and unique window on the earliest moments in the history of the universe and on possible new physics at energies many orders of magnitude beyond those accessible at particle accelerators. Such waves might be detectable soon, in current or planned satellite experiments that will probe for characteristic imprints in the polarization of the cosmic microwave background, or later with direct space-based interferometers. A positive detection could provide definitive evidence for inflation in the early universe and would constrain new physics from the grand unification scale to the Planck scale."

라고 말하고 있다. 초기 급팽창 우주론은 대개 직접적인 증거가 있다기보다는 미소조정 문제나 지평선 문제나 자기홀극 문제를 해결하기 위한 임시방편적인 시나리오로 서술되어 왔다. 이번의 원시 B모드 편극은 급팽창에서 비롯된 흔적을 검출한 것이고, 그런 점에서 급팽창 우주론이 이제는 '시나리오'가 아니라 '이론'으로 승급되었다는 의미가 될 것이다. 그것만으로도 충분히 의미 있는 일임에 틀림없다.

그래도 "빅뱅에서 온 중력파가 검출되다"라는 제목은 좀 그렇다. 하긴 1919년 에딩턴이 아인슈타인의 일반상대성이론을 입증한 것으로 알려진 일식 관측 탐사의 결과를 발표했을 때 런던 타임즈 기사 제목은 "과학에서의 혁명; 뉴턴의 믿음이 전복되다" 뭐 그런 식이었고, 굳이 따지면 틀린 것은 아니었지만, 그런 엄청난 제목을 갖다 붙이는 바람에 아인슈타인이 더 유명해진 면도 있을 것이다.
